- American with Disabilities Act
- Prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications and access to state and local government’ programs and services.
- Cultural Competence
- the ability of systems to provide care to patients with diverse values, beliefs and behaviors
- Culturally Responsive Teaching
- Noun
- is a research-based approach to teaching that connects students’ cultures, languages, and life experiences with what they learn in school.
- Culture
- the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group
- Disability
- a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities
- Diversity
- noun
- the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders and sexual orientations
- Equality
- the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.
- Equity
- the quality of being fair and impartial
- Ethnicity
- he fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition
- Hidden Curriculum
- Noun
- A hidden curriculum is a set of lessons that are learned but not intended to be taught in school such as the norms, values, and beliefs conveyed in both the classroom and social environment.
- Inclusion
- the practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or mental disabilities and members of other minority groups.
- Indigenous
- originating or occurring naturally in a particular place
- Intersectionality
- the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group
- LGBTQ
- lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (or questioning).
- Meritocracy
- government or the holding of power by people selected on the basis of their ability.
- Microaggression
- a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority
- People of Color
- a person who is not white
- Privilege
- a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group
- Race
- a group of people sharing the same culture, history, language
- Racism
- prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group.
- Religion
- the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods.
- Social Justice
- noun
- justice in relation to the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society.
- Socioeconomic Status
- economic and sociological combined total measure of a person's work experience and of an individual's or family's economic and social position in relation to others
- Stereotype
- a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing
- Systems of Oppression
- discriminatory institutions, structures, norms, to name a few, that are embedded in the fabric of our society
